Abstract

China’s modern and increasingly self-assured military and naval prowess has worried both Eastern and Western military commanders and policymakers alike since the turn of the 21st century. Harder to see from satellite imagery or discern from Chinese doctrinal and bureaucratic developments are China’s efforts to harness the “fifth domain” to compete militarily in the other four domains (Land, Sea, Air, and Space) and strategically on the world stage. To assist in distilling and explaining China’s approach to cyberspace and information warfare, Dean Cheng, a Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, wrote Cyber Dragon: Inside China’s Information Warfare and Cyber Operations. It is the most recent offering from Praeger’s Changing Face of War series, edited by Cheng’s fellow Heritage Foundation scholar James Jay Carafano.
